The president of the National Federation of Fishermen of Spain, José Basilio Otero, argued that the EU and the United Kingdom should already have reached an agreement on fishing in the Brexit trade negotiations. While speaking to Sky News, Mr. Otero expressed his frustration at the lack of progress regarding Spain’s rights to fish in British waters after 2020. He stated that he and his fishermen would pressure the Spanish government to block any trade deals if They were not granted access to UK waters.

The Sky News presenter said: “In Spain, one of the largest fisheries unions told me that it would pressure the government to block any deal that cuts off access to British waters.”

Otero said: “We needed an agreement on October 1 to delineate the new situation as of January 1.

“But at the moment there is nothing, so the concern is at the maximum.

“If there is no agreement, we will ask the government to veto the deal.”

Fishermen in France have also expressed concern about confusion over fishing rights.

While speaking to Sky News, Mr Gaetan Delsart said: “We small boats fish for crabs, whelks and they are species found in British waters.

“So it’s just going to be catastrophic for us because we’ve all had to put ourselves in French waters, but not just us.

“We all have to come back here, to the French side, to live with the Belgians, the Dutch.

Fisherman Laurent Merlin said: “We have no fish left in French waters.

“The sole has already disappeared completely, the small amount that remains is in British waters.

We will demand that Belgian fishermen stay in Belgian waters and Dutch fishermen stay in Duch waters.

“Because if everyone comes to French waters, we have nothing left to fish, it will be catastrophic for us.”
