A Yorkshire mother and three of her children were killed in a collision between a minivan and a heavy vehicle.
A four-year-old girl, a six-year-old boy, an eight-year-old girl and a 29-year-old woman were pronounced dead at the scene on the A40 near Oxford Monday night, Thames Valley police said. .
A national newspaper and several other outlets report that the mother had moved to South Sheffield in 2014.
The collision between a silver Subaru minivan and a white HGV took place near a railway bridge just west of Oxford.
Two other Subaru passengers, a 30-year-old man and an 18-month-old girl, were taken to John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford, where they both remain in critical condition.
Police said the HGV driver, a 56-year-old man, suffered minor injuries.
The force said they were called at 9.50 pm, adding that they received “multiple” calls from the public.
Officers remain at the scene and the A40 will be closed in both directions for a “considerable” period of time while the investigation continues.
Sergeant Dominic Mahon, Senior Investigation Officer, Bicester-based Major Collision Investigation Unit, said officers are in the early stages of investigating what he described as an “incredibly tragic” incident and ” horrific”.
Asking for help from the public, he said: “I would appeal to anyone who was driving in the area at the time of the collision and witnessed what happened, please contact 101, or make a report online, citing reference number 43200321914 .
“I also urge anyone who has footage of the dashcam incident or any of the vehicles just prior to the incident not to share it publicly, but to contact the police with this detail.”
Sergeant Mahon cautioned against speculation about the cause of the collision, adding: “We will leave no stone unturned to determine what caused this tragedy.
“The closest family members have been informed and are being supported by specially trained family liaison officers.
“The thoughts of all of us at Thames Valley Police, along with our partners who have assisted on the scene or at the hospital, are with families at this incredibly difficult time.
“I would also like to pay tribute to our officers, first responders and medical professionals who dealt with this collision.
“Our officers and colleagues from the other emergency services were dealing with an extremely disturbing scene and I would like to thank them for the work they did during the night.”
