Northeast residents CAN now visit friends or family in their gardens under the new closure rules

The Government has confirmed that under the new closure rules announced today, people in Northeast CAN now visit friends and family in their gardens.

Previously, local lockdown restrictions in Newcastle, Gateshead, Sunderland, County Durham, South Tyneside, North Tyneside and Northumberland prevented residents from visiting other homes in homes or gardens, or allowing people from other homes to enter their own homes or gardens. .

A home means the people you live with. Therefore, you would not be able to meet family members in your home or garden, or in your home or garden, if you lived separately.

But under the new three-tier system announced by Prime Minister Boris Johnson, this has changed.

The seven northeastern authorities have been classified as areas with a “high” alert level for Covid-19. This is the second of the three levels.

And the new rules state that only people from the same household (or bubble of support) can gather indoors, but the “rule of six” applies outdoors, even in gardens.

The rule of six says that only six people can be together. But it does NOT prevent people from different households from mixing.

It means the new rules are less strict when it comes to meeting people in the gardens. You will be able to meet people from other homes in gardens, but not indoors.

Please note that the changes do not take effect until Wednesday.

Speaking in the House of Commons, Johnson said: “The ‘high’ alert level reflects interventions in many local areas at this time.

“This has as main objective to reduce the transmission from home to home, avoiding any mixture between different homes or supporting the bubbles inside.

“In these areas, the Rule of Six will continue to apply outdoors, where it is more difficult for the virus to spread, both in public spaces and in private gardens.

“Most of the areas that are already subject to local restrictions will automatically go to the ‘high’ alert level.”

What exactly are the new rules?

Each area is placed on one of three levels. There is a list below that states which area is at what level. So the rules depend on what level you are at.

Local Covid Alert Level: Medium

This is for the areas with the lowest level of infections, where national restrictions continue to apply. This means:

  • All businesses and venues can continue to operate, in a Covid-safe manner, except those that remain closed by law, such as nightclubs.
  • Certain businesses that sell food or drink on their premises must close between 10 p.m. and 5 a.m. Businesses and places that sell food for consumption outside the premises can continue to do so after 10 p.m., as long as it is through the service delivery, click and collect or drive-thru.
  • Schools, universities and places of worship remain open
  • Weddings and funerals may continue with restrictions on the number of attendees.
  • Organized indoor sport and exercise classes may continue to be taught as long as the Rule of Six is followed
  • People should not gather in groups of more than 6, indoors or outdoors

Local COVID-19 Alert level: high

This is for areas with a higher level of infections. This means that the following additional measures have been implemented:

  • People should not meet with anyone outside their home or support the bubble in any indoor setting, whether at home or in a public place.
  • People should not gather in a group of more than 6 outdoors, even in a garden or other space.
  • People should try to reduce the number of trips they take whenever possible. If they need to travel, they should walk or bike whenever possible, or plan ahead and avoid rush hours and public transportation routes.

Local COVID-19 Alert level: very high

This is for areas with a very high level of infection. The Government will establish a baseline of measures for any area at this local alert level. Consultation with local authorities will determine additional measures.

The baseline means that the following additional measures have been implemented:

  • Pubs and bars are required to close and can only remain open where they operate as if they were a restaurant, which means they serve hearty meals such as main lunch or dinner. They can only serve alcohol as part of said meal.
  • Wedding receptions are not allowed
  • People should not meet anyone outside their home or support the bubble anywhere indoors or outdoors, whether at home or in a public space. The Rule of Six applies to open public spaces like parks and beaches.
  • People should try to avoid traveling outside of the ‘Very High’ area they are in, or entering a ‘Very High’ area, except for issues such as work, education, access to youth services, to comply with care responsibilities or if they are in transit.
  • People should avoid spending the night in another part of the UK if they reside in a ‘Very High’ area, or avoid spending the night in a ‘Very High’ area if they reside elsewhere.

The municipalities can then request the adoption of additional measures.
