A “progressive rise” in coronavirus infections from young to old has already “caused” more deaths, a senior government adviser warned.
Professor Jonathan Van-Tam, England’s deputy chief medical officer, revealed that there has been a “marked recovery” from COVID-19 cases since early September.
He said that since more people have grasped the disease, “We’ve baked more hospital admissions and sadly, we’ve baked more deaths as well.”
Presenting the latest statistics, Professor Van-Tam said that cases in the North West of England increased first among 16-29 year olds, but are now beginning to spread to more vulnerable age groups.
“That pattern is likely to follow” in the Northeast and Yorkshire and the Humber, he warned at a Downing Street news conference on Monday.
Meanwhile, NHS Nightingale hospitals in Manchester, Sunderland and Harrogate have been told to prepare to start accepting patients again.
This is because about 40% of all cases are concentrated in the Northwest, according to Professor Jane Eddleston, who also spoke at the press conference.
