Five people were killed after a tourist plane and a microlight collided in midair in western France on Saturday afternoon.

The small ultralight was carrying two people and collided with a DA40 tourist plane, which was carrying three people on board.

The collision occurred around 4:30 pm local time in Loches, Indre-et-Loire department, said local government official Nadia Seghier.

The secretary general added that the ultralight, or ULM plane, “landed on the fence around a house,” but no one else on the ground was injured.

All five passengers aboard the two planes involved have died.

Seghier added: ‘(The ultralight) landed on the fence around a house without harming anyone else, (the DA40) several hundred meters away in an uninhabited area.

“All five people involved died.”

The collision reportedly took place in midair on the Châteauroux side of the small town.

The tourist plane had taken off from Poitiers, located about 100 kilometers from Loches, according to the Mirror.

But the ultralight’s flight path remains unknown at this time.

About 50 firefighters were called in while 30 gendarmes, paramilitary police, set up detours on the roads around the accident sites.

“At first they brought in air emergency personnel from Lyon to track the plane, which was quickly found,” the prefecture said.

So far no details have been released on the identities of the victims or the causes of the collision.

The Loches police have taken over the investigation of the accident.
