The Duchess of Sussex has spoken out about the “almost insurmountable” online abuse she experienced on a podcast to mark World Mental Health Day.
Appearing alongside her husband Prince Harry on the popular Teen Therapy podcast, Meghan said she was told that “in 2019, I was the most trolled person in the world, male or female.”
“[For] eight months of that, it wasn’t even visible, I was on maternity leave with the baby, but what could be manufactured and produced is almost insurmountable, it’s so big that you can’t even think about what it feels like, “she said.
Introducing themselves as Harry and Meghan, the couple spoke about their experiences of loss and grief, with Harry saying that “each and every one of us” should talk about our mental health.
Meghan said her mental health deteriorated due to the trolling with which she was attacked.
“I don’t care if you are 15 or 25 years old, if people say things about you that are not true, what that does to your mental and emotional health is so harmful,” he said.
This was especially a problem for many during the coronavirus lockdown, he said, when “if you’re not in school, then you’re on your devices or online more.”
“Yes, it is a great way to connect, but it also ends up being a place where there is a lot of disconnection,” he added.
“We all know what it feels like when our feelings are hurt, we all know what it feels like to be isolated, and I think that’s why the work they are doing here is so important,” he said.
Harry said that it is “very easy to be absorbed and consumed by negativity”, but everyone has “the option of being able to eliminate that from our lives”.
He said: “Hating to continue has become a thing, it is not necessary to do that. As much as we worry, worry and realize what we put in our stomach as a diet, the same applies to our eyes and our mind. , what we consume is affecting us.
“For me, I made the decision not to read it, not to see it, to walk away from it and to focus a lot on the uplifting and hopeful side.”
