Northern mayors have rejected Chancellor Rishi Sunak’s new licensing plan for businesses closed due to local coronavirus restrictions, arguing that the financial package is “insufficient” to protect communities in the north of England.
Mayors have urged MPs to call for a debate and vote in the Commons on the package and push for more financial support for hospitality workers.
It comes as Boris Johnson is expected to make a statement to MPs on Monday in which he will reveal new restrictions and a three-tier system for local lockdown rules.
How could pubs be affected by the new Covid rules?
Drinkers and diners in Liverpool, Newcastle and Manchester are enjoying what could be their last orders this weekend, as pubs and restaurants in the north of England are expected to have to close to limit the spread of the coronavirus.
It comes amid government concern that nearly a third of Covid-19 infections occur through hospitality settings and follows the start of a 16-day shutdown of locations in Scotland’s central belt.

The government responds to criticism of the Employment Support Program
The UK government has insisted that it has “worked hard to project jobs” during the coronavirus crisis following criticism of Rishi Sunak’s Labor Support Plan by mayors in northern England.
“Throughout the pandemic, we have worked hard to protect jobs and support the economy, while trying to limit the spread of the coronavirus,” a spokesperson said.
“That is why we have established an unprecedented financial support package. The Work Support Program is just one element of this comprehensive package, which includes rental support, mortgage holidays and an additional £ 9.3 billion of social safety net funding to help those who cannot access other forms of support. “.
They added: “The ministers continue to work closely with local leaders on how we can fight the coronavirus together.
“We will keep all financial support under review to support the companies that need it most and protect jobs for the weeks and months to come.”
