Edinson Cavani said that a last minute conversation with Ander Herrera helped convince him to join Manchester United.
Prolific forward Cavani put an end to protracted speculation about his future by signing for United on the day of the transfer deadline following his summer departure from Paris Saint-Germain.
The 33-year-old was linked to a host of different clubs, but revealed that advice from former United Herrera midfielder, with whom he aligned in Paris, played a crucial role in his final decision.
“Yes, I spoke a lot with Ander, as well as with other teammates, such as Ángel Di María,” said Cavani.
“It was really reaching the last minute and I called Ander to chat.
“I have a lot of admiration for Ander, for the type of person he is and I had the feeling that his words were going to help me, by telling me a little about how he was at United.
“So, yes, it is true that after I finished speaking with Ander, we reached an agreement here with the club.
“I hadn’t known Ander for a long time, but we formed and enjoyed a close friendship during that time at PSG, and today we are still very good teammates.”
Cavani has scored 341 goals in 556 games during his club career and is enjoying the opportunity to prove himself in the Premier League.
After signing a one-year contract with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s team, he was presented with the number seven jersey previously worn by club greats George Best, Eric Cantona, David Beckham and Cristiano Ronaldo.
The Uruguayan international hopes to live up to the responsibility that comes with the shirt and help United return “to the top.”
“When you have the opportunity to wear the number 7 jersey at Manchester United, which has been worn by some of the best players who have been legends here in this country and at this club, it is a huge responsibility.” he said.
“I enjoy the challenges and I hope I can do it great justice and leave it in the same regard as the many great players who have worn this jersey before me.
“It is a fantastic challenge and I will work very hard to perform at my best and be able to leave that number, that jersey, just as those players left it.
“I was very attracted to the possibility of playing in English football and also Manchester United because I feel that I still really want to compete, work hard and do my best.
“Let’s hope we are up to the task and represent this club, and together with everyone, help take it to the top.”
Cavani, who also has 50 international goals in 116 international matches, has been available since leaving Ligue 1 champions PSG at the end of June.
He began his career at the Uruguayan club Danubio and has also played for the Serie A teams Palermo and Napoli.
His debut with United is expected to be delayed due to coronavirus regulations.
Speaking about competing in England, Cavani said: “For me that is a real honor, an honor and a new challenge, which really excites me a lot.”
“I can’t wait to start to feel what it’s like to play in the Premier League.”
“I have been fortunate to have played against many English teams, but now it is my turn to experience playing and competing every weekend and in every English Premier League game.”
