Nottingham remains in limbo over the coronavirus restrictions to be imposed by the government, despite another spike in the rate of new cases for the city and county.

The weekly rate of new Covid-19 cases in the city has risen further and has now exceeded 750 cases per 100,000 people, the latest data released on Friday shows.

A total of 2,532 new cases were recorded in Nottingham in the seven days to October 6, the equivalent of 760.6 cases per 100,000 people, and the highest rate in England.

It’s a huge jump from 527 new cases in the previous seven days (the week to September 29), or 158.3 per 100,000 people.

Nottingham remains well ahead of the area with the second highest rate in England, Knowsley, which now has 657.6 cases per 100,000.

In Nottinghamshire, there have also been sharp increases in rates for Broxtowe, Gedling and Rushcliffe.

Each county district area has seen a rate increase over the last seven days available figures.

City Council Leader David Mellen has also urged people to stay home for the weekend.

“Everyone in Nottingham is facing an election this weekend,” Mellen said. “It could be seen as an opportunity for one last explosion before the government imposes tougher restrictions next week.

“I urge you not to be tempted to do that. I implore you all to make the safe and sensible choice and stay home.

“No one should be fooled into thinking that they are somehow immune to it; you are not, and not only that, but you also run the very real risk of spreading it to other people who may be seriously affected or even die from it. “

Sherwood MP and government whip boss Mark Spencer has pleaded with students to “stop and think” before hanging out with friends or throwing final adventure parties before a local shutdown.

The average age of those who tested positive for Covid-19 in Nottingham has dropped significantly to 21, according to a city council report.

Lockdown measures for the city or county have yet to be announced and politicians and local residents have also spoken about the troubling increase.

But leaked government documents revealed when new local restrictions are expected to be introduced across the county.

The documents state that the government is expected to announce the new local measures on Monday, October 12, which will take effect from Wednesday, October 14.
