Paul Merson has claimed that Manchester United “will not go anywhere” after the deadline day fight.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer spent the entire window chasing attacking signings and in the last hours he connected three forwards.
Edinson Cavani signed a free transfer from PSG, while young wingers Facundo Pellistri and Amad Diallo are more likely to have an impact in the future.
But Merson has claimed that United should have focused on defensive signings after sending 11 goals in three games.
Solskjaer watched as Tottenham scored six times at Old Trafford to condemn them to a second straight loss at home to start the season.
The former Arsenal star has also claimed that his former team has gotten ahead of United, after they signed Thomas Partey on Monday.
Mikel Arteta achieved his main goal after the Gunners finally activated the release clause of the former Atlético de Madrid midfielder.
And writing in his Daily Star column, Merson has claimed that Partey should have been a target for the Old Trafford bosses.
He said: “I like where Arsenal is going on the field. Mikel Arteta is doing very well. And Partey is an incredible signing.
“I don’t know why Manchester United or even Manchester City didn’t choose him. It’s better than what they have. ”

Meanwhile, on United’s transfers, Merson has claimed they have “opened the door” for players like Arsenal and Everton to move closer to the top four list.
“Edinson Cavani is a disappointing signing for Manchester United that shows they are not going anywhere.”
“They have been available on a free transfer since I don’t know when, and I don’t think Tottenham will beat them because they can’t get the ball into the net.
“Having a man sent off in that game just gave them an excuse. They were already all over the store on the defensive.
“It’s difficult to play for a great club when you don’t have rhythm and their centrals don’t.
Do you agree with Merson or will Edinson Cavani be a hit at Man Utd this season? Give us your opinion here.
“I thought they were a shoe for the top four before the season started, but until they get some legs in those four, I don’t see where they’re going.
“They have opened the door for teams like Arsenal, Tottenham and Everton to finish in the top four this season.
“I don’t think they are one of the top four clubs at the moment. They can’t defend the candy and they let Chris Smalling go to Rome. He would probably join the team right now.
“Cavani feels like a quick fix. But probably not even that, if I’m honest. I don’t see that he is the difference. “
