80-year-old man run over and killed while crossing the street

A man was run over and killed while crossing the street in Walton.

The victim, in his 80s, was walking down County Road shortly after 7 p.m. Thursday night when he was hit by a car.

A black Volkswagen Polo reportedly crashed into the pedestrian before stopping at the scene and calling emergency services.

Paramedics rushed the man to hospital shortly after, but he has since sadly died of his injuries.

Road closures were established at the scene when Merseyside Police launched an investigation into the accident.

In a statement, a spokesman for the force said: “We can confirm that a man in his 80s has sadly died after a traffic collision in Walton on Thursday night (October 8).

“Shortly after 7 pm, a black VW Polo was reported to have collided with a male pedestrian on County Road near its intersection with Newark Street.

“Emergency services came and the pedestrian was taken to the hospital. Despite the efforts of paramedics and medical staff at the hospital, he was sadly pronounced dead shortly afterwards.

“Efforts are being made to formally identify the man and inform his relatives.

“The driver of the Polo stopped at the scene and is helping with police investigations.”

A section of County Road, from Queens Drive to Spellow Lane, remains closed while examination of the scene continues.
