Thomas Partey signed with Arsenal on the day of the transfer deadline, the Premier League club confirmed.
The Ghana midfielder Partey arrives from Atlético de Madrid after making nearly 200 appearances for the Spanish club, after graduating from their youth academy and becoming one of Europe’s highest rated players.
The 27-year-old was one of Arsenal’s main targets all summer, along with Houssem Aouar, and after admitting defeat in their quest to sign the Lyon midfielder, the Gunners moved quickly for Partey.
They were quick to close the deal before the 11pm deadline on Monday, and they succeeded with Partey, Arsenal’s new official recruit, who joined after his £ 45m release clause was triggered.
Coach Mikel Arteta said: “We have been watching Thomas for a while so now we are delighted to add such a high quality player to our team.
“He is a dynamic midfielder with a lot of energy. He brings a lot of experience from a first-rate club that has competed at the highest level in LaLiga and the Champions League for several years.
“We are very impressed with his attitude and his approach to the game. He is a smart footballer and we are looking forward to him integrating himself into our system and contributing to the progress we are making at the moment at the club.
He comes to North London as one of the most praised midfielders in European football, establishing his reputation as an excellent all-rounder that influences both the offensive and defensive phases of the game.
A Football Whispers scout report released earlier this year best sums up Partey’s talents, calling him “a one-man wrecking ball who turns out to be able to play soccer.”
He has played 188 games for Atleti, scoring 16 goals, and leaves Wanda Metropolitano with two honors: the Europa League and the UEFA Super Cup, both won in 2018.
Partey’s entire career has been spent playing with Diego Simeone, who will regret losing one of his most important players.
“Thomas is an incredible player,” Simeone previously said of the midfielder. “He could have played for Manchester City [or] Manchester United.
“We are talking about a great player here. I rate it very well. “
Simeone also believes that Partey, who is now 27, has gone unnoticed because he is from Ghana and went through the Atleti academy.
“I could say so many things [about Thomas], but with some I have to shut up ”, said Simeone in October of last year.
“I am very happy with Thomas.
“If I had come from an English or German team, I would be [lauded] But it’s from the academy and it’s just Thomas.
“He has been working for many years, non-stop.”
Former Premier League captain Gabby Agbonlahor believes Partey is the signing that will “guarantee” Arsenal a top four result this season.
“Arsenal need that defensive midfielder who is going to put themselves in order and detect danger,” the former Aston Villa captain said on Sky Sports.
“If they pay it [Partey’s release clause] you can guarantee that Arsenal will finish in the top four, because in their team that’s the only position that I feel they are losing.
The Gunners currently rank fourth in the Premier League embryonic table, behind Everton, Aston Villa and Leicester with three wins and one loss in their four games so far.
