Manchester United have completed Edinson Cavani’s Deadline Day signing to a one-year deal.
It was confirmed on Saturday that the 33-year-old had been in talks with the club and that he secured his transfer to Old Trafford before the transfer deadline at 11pm on Monday.
Cavani left Paris Saint-Germain at the end of last season after scoring 187 goals during his seven years in the French capital.
He becomes United’s second Deadline Day signing after left-back Alex Telles joined from Porto in a £ 15.4 million deal.
“Manchester United are one of the best clubs in the world, so it is a real honor to be here,” said the Uruguayan international.
“I have worked very hard during my free time and I am looking forward to competing and representing this incredible club.
“I have played in front of some of the most passionate football fans in my career and I know it will be the same in Manchester. I can’t wait to experience the atmosphere of Old Trafford when the fans are sure to return.”
“I hope to continue writing my little story in the football book and I know that is why my approach must remain the same as always: work, work, work.
“I have had a conversation with the manager and this has increased my desire to wear this beautiful shirt.”
Cavani will offer Ole Gunnar Solskjaer an experienced attacking option to complement the talents of Marcus Rashford, Anthony Martial and Mason Greenwood.
“Edinson is a great seasoned professional who always gives his all for his team,” said Solskjaer.
“His scoring record with the club and the country is fantastic and we are delighted to sign a player of his caliber. He will bring energy, power, leadership and a great mentality to the squad, but more importantly, he will bring goals.”
“He has had a brilliant career so far, winning trophies in almost every club he has played for, and he still has a lot more to give at the highest level.
“The opportunity for our young players to learn from one of Europe’s top scorers in the last 10 years is fantastic and will really benefit them in the future.
“Edinson knows exactly what it takes to succeed and we all look forward to seeing him make an impact at Manchester United.”
Analysis: United confident Cavani can have an Ibra effect
James Cooper, reporter for Sky Sports News
Manchester United are confident that the signing of Cavani could have a similar effect to that of Zlatan Ibrahimovic, who arrived in the summer of 2016 at the age of 34.
They believe Cavani’s experience and credentials would further develop Mason Greenwood while supporting Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial, as well as adding a different attacking component for Solskjaer.
Potentially, it would also mean that Manchester United would not have the need to replace Odion Ighalo when he returns to China at the end of January.
Cavani may be a free agent after leaving PSG, but his record of 341 goals in 556 club games is impressive and fits in with Manchester United’s offensive DNA.
What we don’t know yet is how fit Cavani is, but United would have time to assess his physical condition and work intensively with him before the 17 October trip to Newcastle.
It is clear that the club has seen an opportunity in Cavani to follow the path of forwards like Ibrahimovic and Henrik Larsson with the conviction that the Uruguayan is enjoying the opportunity to follow in their footsteps.
