Aston Villa had the best summer transfer window of any Premier League club, say hello to TalkSPORT host after Liverpool thrashing

Aston Villa has been hailed for its business during its summer transfer window after beating Premier League champions Liverpool.

Premier League champions Jurgen Klopp were stunned when Ollie Watkins recorded a hat-trick in the first half and John McGinn, Ross Barkley and Jack Grealish, with a double, also scored on Villa’s scoreboard in an impressive win by 7-2 on Sunday.

To suggest that Liverpool were bad would be an insult to Villa, who looked dangerous every time they advanced and was pretty solid behind.

It marks a huge improvement over last season, where scoring goals and keeping them out was a big problem and they only survived the final day of the campaign.

Dean Smith worked with the board to address those issues, with new signings Watkins and Barkley coming off the mark on their side and Emiliano Martinez continuing to look solid between the sticks.

And talkSPORT host and Scotland legend Ally McCoist believes Claret and the Blues have enjoyed a better transfer window than any other club in the division.

ASTON VILLA SUMMER REGISTRATION – WINDOW 2020

  • Ben Chrisene (Exeter) – Undisclosed
  • Matty Cash (Nottingham Forest) – £ 16 million
  • Ollie Watkins (Brentford) – £ 28 million
  • Emiliano Martinez (Arsenal) – £ 17m
  • Bertrand Traore (Lyon) – £ 17 million
  • Ross Barkley (Chelsea) – Season Loan

“What a window Aston Villa has had, when you think about it,” McCoist told talkSPORT Breakfast.

“Martinez, Matty Cash, they got Watkins and then Ross Barkley from Chelsea on a one-season loan to boot.

“They seem to have had a fantastic window! Listen, there are miles to go.

“But what a beginning Villa has had and they look for me, of all the teams of the highest category, who have had the best window.”

The club is not expected to complete any more signings before the window slammed shut on October 5, although a move for Brentford winger Said Benrahama remains a possibility.

With EFL clubs allowed to trade with Premier League teams until October 16, the Algerian international has yet to start a game for the Bees in the Championship and Thomas Frank did not commit to the winger’s future.

“I hope one of the best offensive players in the division stays with us, but if not, I wish him all the best,” Frank said after Sunday’s 4-2 loss to Preston North End.
