Everton have completed the hiring of Norwich defender Ben Godfrey for £ 20m.
Carlo Ancelotti has been in the market for a center-back and turned the attention to the 22-year-old after a loan deal for Chelsea’s first-choice target, Fikayo Tomori, became increasingly unlikely.
Godfrey made 30 top flight appearances for Norwich when Daniel Farke’s team was relegated to the Sky Bet Championship last season, but nonetheless impressed alongside Max Aarons and Jamal Lewis on the Canaries defense.
“It is an honor to join Everton and to be part of a great club,” Godfrey said. “I am very grateful for the opportunity and can’t wait to start.
“The goal for me at Everton is to win trophies and win games. I like to win. I have my heart on my sleeve. I care and I am a passionate boy.
“The fans can guarantee they’ll get 110 percent out of me when I’m on the field.
“This is a club steeped in history that has an exciting team full of world-class players who will help me move to the next level. I am looking forward to working with them and hopefully having a great time with Everton Football Club.
“Carlo Ancelotti, Marcel Brands and the Board want the Club to succeed and it is very exciting to be here.
“The coach’s past speaks for itself. He has worked with some top-level center-backs. I can learn a lot from him and he will help me get to the next level, which is where I want to be. . “
The England U21 international, who made his Young Lions debut last year and started both European U21 Championship qualifiers in early September, has played for Norwich three times so far in this season’s Championship.
AC Milan and Bayer Leverkusen expressed interest in the defender, whom Norwich valued at around £ 30 million, early in the summer transfer window.
Godfrey becomes Everton’s fifth major signing of the summer, following the arrivals of James Rodríguez, Allan, Abdoulaye Doucoure and Niels Nkounkou.
