Joshua Buatsi extended his undefeated record by stopping Marko Calic
Joshua Buatsi endured a swollen eye and an early scare before stopping Marko Calic in the seventh round of a brutal light heavyweight battle.
The 27-year-old maintained his perfect professional record with a display of bravery and firepower as he defeated the Croatian’s aggression in the opening rounds, then explosively forced the save for his 13th consecutive victory.
Buatsi quickly found range for his quick jab, despite a 13-month absence from the ring, but Calic responded with two right-handers in the first round.
Calic had annoyed Buatsi in the early rounds
Calic was undeterred by the Briton’s revered reputation, charging with stiffer right hands in the second during a troubling start for Buatsi.
There was further cause for concern in the third as Calic regularly broke through Buatsi’s defenses, leaving him with a heavily swollen left eye.
Buatsi’s spirit was being severely tested along with his abilities and he dug in malicious body shots in the fourth, while a forehand forced Calic to hold on in the fifth.
Calic held his ground in the sixth, with both men exchanging crisp punches from close range, but Buatsi ended the fight with a ruthless assault in the next.
A right hand sent shock waves through Calic’s legs, who received a count, and the towel was thrown around his corner after a fresh volley from Buatsi, who revealed that his opponent suffered a suspected broken jaw.
