Jürgen Klopp saw his Liverpool side fall into an extraordinary 7-2 loss at Aston Villa and questioned the lack of reaction after a hair-raising early concession and the desire of his players.
The coach had lost his starting goalkeeper, Alisson, to a shoulder injury in training (he will be out for four to six weeks) and the replacement, Adrián, gave Villa the lead with a loose pass from behind.
The goal was scored by Ollie Watkins, Brentford’s £ 28m signing, and ended with a hat-trick. Jack Grealish scored two while Ross Barkley scored his Villa debut with one goal and John McGinn got the other. Mohamed Salah scored both for Liverpool on a night when their high defensive line was dismantled.
“Almost everyone made massive mistakes around goals,” Klopp said. “The first was obviously Adrián but the reaction around the goal was an even bigger mistake. We have to take risks and that is absolutely normal, but we have to protect the risks and we did not. Every ball we lost was a massive counterattack. They were quicker in mind than us. “
Klopp said Alisson had no chance to play in the derby against Everton after the international break. “The injury could have been worse,” he continued. “Four weeks might be possible, six weeks might be more likely.
“Now people may say things about Adrián. The first goal was not good but I don’t think it had anything to do with the other goals. We are not helping him tonight. He’s a really good goalkeeper. Last year we played 11 games with him and won almost all of them [of them]. Our doorman was not the problem. It’s not often that I’ve seen games like this, although I’m old enough to know that strange things can happen in football. At times you could see that Aston Villa loved him more in the challenges and that’s something I saw and I don’t like.
“It is unique? I would like to think so, but the proof of this will be in the coming weeks or months. A game like that shouldn’t happen, one hundred percent. How we react is important. The only problem is that we cannot react tomorrow. These guys are very self-critical and they know that everyone has their hand in this result. “
Villa has won three of three in the Premier League and Dean Smith, the coach, said this result “had to be in the top” for him.
He added: “To get a performance and a result like this against an exceptional team you need something special. I am very proud. We executed the game plan to perfection. It was also our work ethic. We have only played three games, but that performance can give us a lot of confidence and momentum ”.
