The naturalist Sir David Attenborough has revealed that his favorite animal is the monkey, when the children of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge questioned him.

Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis had the opportunity to ask the 94-year-old announcer a question about the natural world.

It is the first time that two-year-old Prince Louis has been heard speaking in public.

The young prince asked, “What animal do you like?” “I like monkeys better because they are so much fun,” Sir David replied.

“Mind you, you can’t have monkeys sitting in the house because that’s not where they live,” he warned, perhaps aware of the duke and duchess’s domestic life at Kensington Palace.

“So what can you have at home that you like? Well, which one would you choose, a puppy or a kitten?” Sir David said, before continuing: “It’s a very difficult question. I think I’d go for a puppy.”

Media titleOther children posed their questions to Sir David Attenborough earlier in the week.

Prince George, the eldest son of Prince William and Catherine, wanted to know: “What animal do you think will go extinct next?”

“Well, let’s hope there aren’t any,” said Sir David.

“There are many things we can do when animals are in danger of extinction. We can protect them.”

He recounted how the population of mountain gorillas in central Africa, which were “very, very rare” 40 years ago, had grown from 250 animals to more than 1,000, thanks to public awareness and global fundraising.

“So you can save an animal if you want to and if you want to,” the famous naturalist told the seven-year-old prince.

“People all over the world are doing that because animals are so precious,” he added. “So let’s hope there aren’t more to go extinct.

Like her brother, five-year-old Princess Charlotte, she began her question confidently: “Hello David Attenborough!”

“I like spiders, do you like spiders too?” she asked

“I love spiders. I’m glad you like them!” Sir David said. “I think they are wonderful things.”

“Why are people so afraid of them? I think it’s because they actually have eight legs, which are much more than us. And if you have eight legs, you can move in any direction, so you can never be.” I’m sure which way that spider will take!

“But spiders are so smart. Have you ever seen one try to build their web? That’s extraordinary. How does this web go round like this … how do they do it? Try to watch and see how they do it – it’s wonderful.”
