US President Donald Trump’s tweet on Friday confirming that he and his wife had tested positive for coronavirus shocked the world.
With Trump now in the hospital, there are increasing questions about how the couple was exposed to the virus.
A crowded event at the Rose Garden is receiving intense attention: last week’s ceremony in which Trump formally announced his nomination of conservative Amy Coney Barrett to the Supreme Court. The World Health Organization says it usually takes five to six days for symptoms to start after contracting the virus.
Footage from the scene showed few attendees wearing masks. The seats weren’t separated by two meters (six feet), while some fist bump, shook hands, or even hugged to say hello.
Seven people who attended are now confirmed to have the virus, although it is unclear exactly where and when they contracted it. Apart from the President and First Lady, they are:
- Kellyanne conway, who resigned as Trump’s senior adviser in August, confirmed Friday that she had tested positive
- Mike lee, a Republican senator from Utah, confirmed his positive test on Twitter, like the senator from North Carolina Thom tillis

Mr. and Mrs. Trump tested positive after the president’s communications director, Hope Hicks, contracted the virus. She did not attend the Rose Garden event.
Guidelines published by the Centers for Disease Control recommend a distance of six feet between people outside your home and covering your nose and mouth when other people are around you.
Dozens of legislators, family members and White House staff attended the event. Those who tested positive sat in the front rows of the packed crowd.
The president stood next to Amy Coney Barrett as he delivered his speech. Barrett tested negative on Friday, according to a White House spokesman.
Vice President Mike Pence and his wife Karen also tested negative. Pence sat across the aisle from Ms. Trump at the ceremony.

Attorney General William Barr sat in the same row as the vice president. A Justice Department spokesperson announced Friday that Barr had tested negative.
Part of last Saturday’s event also took place indoors. A CNN reporter tweeted a photo people in the White House.
Johns Hopkins University coronavirus trackers say 7.3 million people in the US have contracted the virus, the highest number in the world.
The country also has the highest death toll, with more than 208,000 dead.
