José Mourinho has suggested that a cleanup of Tottenham’s fringe players has to happen. The coach, who has signed forward Carlos Vinícius on loan from Benfica and wants another center, with Chelsea’s Antonio Rudiger as a target, says he prefers to work with a squad of 22 outfield players. With Vinícius he is now 27.
Mourinho has made it clear that Danny Rose has no future at Spurs – the left back does not even have a number – and Cameron Carter-Vickers, the other player without a number, is expected to leave. Although the main transfer deadline is Monday night, championship clubs can sign until October 16.
Mourinho has decisions to make about Ryan Sessegnon and Jack Clarke, who joined last summer for £ 25 million and £ 10 million respectively. Both are under 21 and would not occupy slots on the 25-man squad roster.
Sessegnon has only been on one team for game day this season, at Lokomotiv Plovdiv, when he did not come off the bench, and there are numerous clubs that would want him on loan. Clarke spent last season on loan in the Championship at Leeds and Queens Park Rangers, without starting a league game in either, and is not in Mourinho’s plans.
Mourinho is open to moving forward with Juan Foyth, but will he sell a bigger name to raise money for the new center or just to balance the books? The loan fee for Vinícius, last season’s Primeira Liga joint top scorer, is 3 million euros (the option to buy is 42 million euros) and has carried Spurs’ net spending on fees this summer at just over £ 50m. Mourinho has said he would not get in the way of Serge Aurier if the right-back wanted a new challenge.
“The transfer window is two-way and we may be able to let out a couple of players,” Mourinho said. “Their [also] We may be able to let a couple of young players go and experience the game. Of course, we are not going to keep every player in the squad above the normal numbers. I like to work normally with a squad of 22 players plus the goalkeepers and we will not be far from that number.
“My job is not to keep the players happy, it is to get the best possible results. But I agree that it is impossible to keep everyone happy when you have so many players.
