CHRIS SUTTON has called the Rangers’ Europa League celebrations “shameful” and “over the top”.
Last night images of the Gers stars partying appeared in the dressing room after their magnificent 2-1 win over Galatasaray in Ibrox.
Steven Gerrard’s European heroes were filmed signing and dancing with Neil Diamond’s Sweet Caroline after securing group stage football for the third season in a row.
But the Celtic Sutton legend was disappointed by the result, noting that the Turkish giants finished sixth in the Super Lig last season.
He told BT Sport Scottish Football Extra: “Beat the team that finished sixth in the Turkish Super Lig last season?
“It was a good performance and they have done well to reach the groups, but give me a break, the celebrations are totally exaggerated. Totally embarrassing.
“Imagine McCoist, Hateley, Laudrup, Gazza, celebrating reaching the group stage of the Europa League? You’re better than that. Come on.
“I’m talking about the celebrations, we’ve all seen them. It’s embarrassing. How low is the bar?”
However, Ibrox legend Ally McCoist had none of that as she praised the European triumph.
He said: “Ignore it, I’m delighted to see the team spirit, the camaraderie, the enthusiasm, the exhilaration together.
CLOCK’S TICKING Rangers boss Gerrard in liaison with Everton’s Mo Besic and transfer kitty after £ 10 million qualification
“I understand Chris’s point, it was not Real Madrid. Galatasaray were tough opponents, so for Steven Gerrard and the Rangers team completing the qualifying hat-trick is no small achievement.”
The Light Blues can now look forward to playing Benfica, Standard Liege and Lech Poznan after today’s favorable group stage draw.
But Glasgow’s rivals Celtic were not so lucky.
Despite being the best seeds, the Hoops faced a difficult group against AC Milan, Lille and Sparta Prague.
Meanwhile, Gerrard expects the scalp of last night’s euro to fund some late transfer deals.
Scouser have made it clear that they want to go strong before Monday’s deadline, with a midfielder at the top of their wish list.
However, the Ibrox boss declined to have ties to Everton’s playmaker Mo Besic.
