Northumbria University says 770 students tested positive for coronavirus.

A spokesman for the institution, which is based in Newcastle upon Tyne, said 78 students were showing symptoms.

All of them now isolate themselves.

Roommates and any close contacts are also going to be quarantined, and they have been advised to reserve a test if they develop COVID-19 symptoms, the spokesperson added.

Councilor Irim Ali, a member of the Newcastle City Council cabinet, said the city and the university had made “incredible efforts” to create safe environments for students with COVID.

He added: “Unfortunately, a small number of students are undermining these efforts.”

Volunteers will deliver food packages and other essential items to inmates at their accommodation, Cllr Ali said.

She commented, “While work continues to control the ongoing outbreaks, we need all students to adhere to regulations and guidance.

“If we want to defeat the virus, we need a collective effort.”
