The rules of the debate will be changed to avoid a repeat of the chaotic first meeting between Donald Trump and Joe Biden, the US presidential debate committee said.
the grumpy debate Tuesday between the president of the United States and his Democratic rival plunged into chaos, with personal insults and frequent interruptions, mainly from Mr trump.
Chris Wallace, the moderator, had little choice but to plead with the candidates when the rules that both campaigns had agreed upon were not being followed.
What is being planned for future discussions?
One option being discussed is allowing the moderator to cut the microphones when a candidate violates the rules, CBS News reported.
The Commission on Presidential Debates (CPD) said in a statement that the first debate “made it clear that additional structure must be added to the format of the remaining debates to ensure a more orderly discussion of the issues.”
“CPD will carefully consider the changes it will adopt and will announce those measures shortly.”
He added: “The commission thanks Chris Wallace for the professionalism and skill he brought to the debate last night and intends to ensure that additional tools are available to maintain order in the remaining debates.”
CBS News reported that the next 48 hours would be spent writing new guidelines and rules for future discussions, according to a source.
The rules will not be negotiable, the source said.
How have both campaigns reacted?
Trump, retweeting a story about the planned changes in the debate, said: “Try to get a new presenter and a smarter Democratic candidate!”
His team has criticized the plans for future discussions.
Tim Murtaugh, the campaign’s communications director, said: “They are only doing this because their man was beaten last night.
“President Trump was the dominant force and now Joe biden is trying to work the references. They shouldn’t move the posts and change the rules in the middle of the game. “
Biden called the debate “a national disgrace.”
His campaign deputy director, Kate Bedingfield, said the former vice president “will focus on answering questions from voters there, under whatever set of rules the Commission develops to try to contain Donald Trump’s behavior.”
What happened in the first debate?
Wednesday’s debate saw constant interruptions from Trump, sparking disputes, and both candidates spoke to each other.
Trump questioned Biden’s intelligence and said, “There’s nothing smart about you Joe. 47 years old, you haven’t done anything.”
He later bought Biden’s son Hunter, raising questions about his ties to Ukraine and mentioning his drug problems.
The couple also clashed over Biden’s now-deceased son Beau and his military service.
Meanwhile, Biden called Trump “the worst president this country has ever had,” called him a “clown,” and at one point asked him, “You wanna shut up, man?”
