Darren Fletcher has called on Manchester United to back manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer in the transfer market, following the team’s 3-0 Carabao Cup win in Brighton.
Solskjaer led United to the quarter-finals of the competition despite making 10 changes to their starting lineup for the second trip to Brighton in the space of four days, with Scott McTominay, Juan Mata and Paul Pogba on target.
However, Solskjaer, speaking to Sky Sports after the win, said there was no transfer news to report and, with the deadline looming on Monday, former United midfielder Fletcher says the club must join the squad if they want to. be successful this season.
Manchester United are in talks with Barcelona about a loan deal for Ousmane Dembele, while the Premier League club is also considering an upgraded offer from Borussia Dortmund winger Jadon Sancho. United are eager to sign a winger during this transfer window and while their first choice is Sancho, Dembélé represents a strong alternative.
“We know that it is more difficult for Manchester United to sign players. The value increases, the negotiations are difficult,” Fletcher told Sky Sports.
“But at the same time they will be frustrated – Ole, the fans, everyone in the club – that Chelsea and other teams can do their business early, and that other teams have already spent a lot of money while Manchester United watch. as if they were going to leave it at the last minute.
“For me, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, for the work he has done for the club, from where he was to where he is now, he deserves the players he wants.
“He always cares about the best interests of the club, I know, but sometimes Ole also has to take care of himself, because he will be judged season after season.
“People don’t look at the work you’ve done, they want the here and now, and for Manchester United to get where they want to, they need players.
“They need three, four, five players to come close to challenging Liverpool. If they don’t recruit, it will be difficult for them to finish in the top four.”
“I would hate all that pressure and criticism to go to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, because I feel like he has done a fantastic job.
“The board has to support him. Ole will have identified goals and the club will have identified goals. They have five or six days to get him help and some players.”
United’s best performance of the season
United had beaten Brighton in the Premier League on Saturday, thanks to a last-gasp VAR decision and Leandro Trossard hitting the wood no less than five times.
But they were the much more comfortable winners at the Amex on Wednesday night. Brighton created chances and had long spells in the United half, but the visitors finally got quality in the final third.
Fletcher was impressed with the display and said it was the best the team had shown so far this season.
“This is United’s best performance of the season,” he said. “They really stepped up and played good football. Brighton beat them over the weekend, but they learned from their mistakes.
“I know there were changes from the weekend, but it was a much better performance. There was much more urgency and intensity and they defended as a team.”
