Mata’s performance received praise from Match of the Day host Gary Lineker.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer told the club’s website when discussing United’s second goal: “Juan stepped back, started the play and showed some real quality and composure tonight.

Added Mata’s pitch for United’s first after winning Scott McTominay’s free throw; “It was a wonderful job from Juan and a great dedication.”

Mata connected well with new signing Donny van de Beek for United’s second, with the Dutchman’s back heel preparing the veteran to double the lead.

Paul Pogba then put the result out of the question with a free kick to put United into the quarter-finals.

The draw for the round of 16 of the Carabao Cup will take place on Thursday night after Liverpool’s home game against Arsenal.

Before that, United will meet our Champions League opponents, and the draw will begin at 4pm.
