Tottenham head coach José Mourinho believes the club will hire a new forward before the summer transfer window closes on Monday.

Harry Kane is the only recognized center forward on the Spurs first team roster this season, and MPs Heung-Min Son and Gareth Bale are currently unavailable.

Tottenham have been linked to moves for Josh King of Bournemouth, Arkadiusz Milik of Napoli and Andrea Belotti of Torino, but Mourinho is confident the club will secure a natural back-up forward for Kane before Monday’s 11pm deadline.

The Portuguese said: “I am optimistic, but more than that the feeling that I like is that we are trying everything to achieve it.

“You are successful or you are not successful. It’s like a football match: you win or you don’t win but you give everything and you try everything. The transfer market is the same.

“I like the feeling that my club is trying to do everything for us and for the team, that is the most important thing for me.

“If we do it, great, I think so, but if not, that’s football.”

Jose: I only have respect for Alli

Transfer speculation continues to surround Dele Alli after he was left out of Tottenham’s team of the day for their Carabao Cup fourth-round win over Chelsea on Tuesday, the second straight game he has missed.

Mourinho did not confirm whether the England midfielder will participate in Thursday’s Europa League play-off match against Israeli champion Maccabi Haifa, but praised the 24-year-old’s professionalism and attitude to his uncertain future at the club.

He said, “I can’t confirm if Dele is playing [against Maccabi Haifa] tomorrow, but I can’t confirm that I’m not playing either.

The Transfer Show’s Dharmesh Sheth explains why Dele Alli’s future at Tottenham remains unclear

“We still have a training session today and we still have decisions to make.

“All I can say is that he is being very professional. I just have respect for him, he is being very professional.”

“Even yesterday when the team was preparing for a match and he was not, the lack of motivation and even the lack of professionalism in his training session would have been perfectly acceptable, but it was the opposite.

“Yesterday he trained very well and hard, so he has my respect and the respect of his teammates, so it is possible that he will play tomorrow.”
