M4 traffic: road closed after accident near Chippenham today – updates

There have been two separate crashes on the same section of the M4 this afternoon (Wednesday 30 September).

Wiltshire Police have confirmed that they witnessed both collisions between J17 A350 (Chippenham) and J18 A46 (Bath) on the westbound carriageway.

Currently, all traffic is stopped on the westbound carriageway due to a multi-vehicle accident and another collision.

Inrix, the traffic monitoring site, reported that traffic was held up on westbound and eastbound carriageways, while traffic officials assessed the situation at 11:54 a.m. M.

Highways England South West tweeted: “# M4 Heading west between J17 #Chippenham and J18 #Bathtub It is currently CLOSED due to an accident. Consider alternative routes and plan your trip in advance. ”

In an alert, on its website Highways England South West it says that Wiltshire police are present.

They have issued the following detour: “Exit the M4 at J17 and follow the solid diamond detour symbol

“Take the 2nd exit off the roundabout onto the A350 southbound

“At the Chippenham A350 / A420 roundabout, take the 4th exit onto the A420 West (Bristol Road)

“At the Cold Ashton A420 / A46 roundabout, take the 3rd exit onto the A46 northbound

“Rejoin M4 at J18”.
