For a long time, it was difficult to look past Manchester City and their shame of riches, especially in the last third.
Liverpool’s emergence as European and Premier League champions demonstrated Jurgen Klopp’s ability to nurture a strong starting eleven, but the past few weeks have been a potentially critical time for the club’s progression.
Liverpool fans barely had time to digest the announcement of Thiago Alcántara’s arrival when it emerged that the club had made a deal with the Wolves for Diogo Jota.
Jota’s raid further strengthens Jurgen Klopp’s front line while reducing the advantage Man City has in terms of depth.
Pep Guardiola was never likely to spoil last season. City’s inability to win the Premier League or Champions League can only be viewed as failure, and as such they must respond, all the more so after the shocking 5-2 loss at home to Leicester City on Sunday.
Meanwhile, the nature of Klopp’s team building up to this point means that the depth issue will come up whenever the team suffers a poor result.
However, Klopp has been consistent with his rhetoric and took the time to praise the team’s depth following the victory over Everton in December.
“There were a lot of good football moments in that game,” Klopp said. “We made five changes. I talk a lot about the quality of the squad, so I have to prove it from time to time.
“You give the guys the responsibility, and they have to show that they can perform and what they are made of, which is incredible. Divock’s goal, Sadio’s passes, Shaq’s everything, Adam Lallana everywhere and so many really good moments. So many good football moments.
“They are fantastic footballers. I said before the season that there is no one in the squad who is not an outstanding footballer ”.

Klopp is also aware of the growing challenge facing the club, not just in terms of beating City at the top, but the response the rest of the Premier League will face.

The Portuguese striker will add proven Premier League quality to an already talented Liverpool squad.
Klopp promised that his team go on the attack this season as they look to retain their Premier League title, and this move is him delivering on his promise.
Guardiola’s men have apparently had something of a monopoly on national cups at times in recent years, as their fringe players have swept everyone before them.
But as Liverpool’s second string demonstrated with their 7-2 win against Lincoln, the depth gap has possibly narrowed.
Man City will try to match Liverpool with a renewed level of ambition this season.
And because of that, we will not only see a more passionate debate on who is the strongest team, but also perhaps another passionate title run in the Premier League.
