Shocking scenes of mass gatherings in Liverpool city center last night sparked further criticism about the 10pm closing time on the new lockdown restrictions.
One video showed an impromptu crowd chanting and partying at the top of Church Street and Hanover Street, while other photos showed groups gathering outside the licenses to stock up on alcohol instead of returning home once the bars and restaurants closed.
Liverpool Mayor Joe Anderson took to social media to say: “A picture is worth a thousand words, and these three pictures from last night in Liverpool show why the closure of pubs and restaurants at 10.00pm is just making things worse. things, not getting better. ”
“This was repeated throughout the UK.”
This was the first weekend that the new 10pm c urfew was in operation under tighter lockdown restrictions amid mounting evidence of a “second wave” of coronavirus cases.
It meant that bars, pubs, cafes and restaurants were required by law to close between 10 p.m. and 5 a.m.
Both the government and the people on the streets were criticized on social media and the Echo comment system.

SirPercivalGlyde37 said: “These scenes are so predictable and they perfectly symbolize the idiocy of curfew: how not to facilitate social distancing.
“And trying to keep students, supposedly the smart elite of tomorrow, not huddled in loud groups of drunkards, is like trying to herd cats. It’s a shame the government can’t manipulate the weather, so it rains a lot at all downtown on the weekends, that would cloud things a bit further down. “

The Broadway troublemaker said: “This was the government’s warning shot, measures that are manageable and that they would consider cause fairly minimal financial impact.
“However, they know full well, as most people do now, that the only real solution is another hard lockdown, they are probably just stalling as they prepare to introduce it.”
