A major fire has destroyed a number of Swansea businesses leaving the owners “devastated”.
Firefighters spent the entire night tackling the blaze, on Pentrechwyth Road, which destroyed a row of commercial property.
Nearby residents were evacuated from the area when the fire ripped through a garage, a boutique store and four other commercial units Saturday night.
Fire crews remain on site Sunday (Sept. 27) morning and there are road closures in the area.
The fire is believed to have started at around 10:30 p.m. before quickly spreading.
Rhiannon Haynes-Gibbs, owner of ‘Uniquely Yours by Rhi’, said she had lost everything when the fire destroyed her rented space.
She said, “We have lost everything. We are devastated. I can’t stop crying. I don’t know what to do.
“I thought we might have been able to salvage something, but after talking to the fire department at 3 am, it seems like everything is gone.”
There are four businesses in the row of business units in the Bonymaen area of Swansea, one of which has been there for 24 years, he added. They include Kilvey Cabs, an auto paint shop, and a rear auto mechanic.
Residents across the street were evacuated when the fire took hold and smoke rose through the street.
The fire service said the cause of the fire remains “under investigation.”
A spokeswoman for the South Wales Fire Service confirmed that the crews were still at the scene Sunday morning.
She said: “We still have some teams present. We were alerted at 10.32pm and we attended a fire at a commercial property on Pentrechwyth Road.
“Two crews remain on the scene, but we had a variety of crews there. At the height of the incident, we had six fire trucks, an aerial device and other specialized devices, including a water boat.”
On Sunday morning, duty inspector Paul Thomas of the South Wales Police confirmed that some residents had been evacuated from their homes “for safety”.
On Saturday night, the force issued a statement that read: “Shortly after 10:30 pm tonight (Saturday 26 September), emergency services were called to a fire in a garage on Pentrechwyth Road, Pentrechwyth, Swansea .
“Several neighboring properties have been evacuated as a precaution and roads have been closed between the junction with Pen and Garn Road and the junction of Pentrechwyth Road with the A4217.
“Motorists are advised to avoid the area.
“The Fire Service is addressing the fire and the cause remains under investigation.”
The highway was still closed Sunday morning as firefighters continued to make the area safe.
