The government’s official coronavirus watch list has had 38 new local authorities added, including all 32 London boroughs, as infectious disease cases spike across the UK.
Friday was the second day in a row that the highest number of Covid-19 cases was recorded in the UK.
There were 6,874 laboratory-confirmed cases, bringing the total number to 423,236.
All boroughs in London are listed as “areas of concern”.
Meanwhile, several major urban areas in the north have also been added to the list, including Leeds, Stockport, Wigan and Blackpool, all of which have been deemed severe enough to be added to the list of “intervention areas”.
In these areas, people will no longer be allowed to mingle with people outside their home or to bubble in private homes, including gardens.
The government’s weekly Covid-19 surveillance report reveals that the incidence rate in the City of London is estimated at 11.5 per 100,000 people, while in Havering, East London, it stands at 30.3.
The report says: “Case rates remain highest in North West and Yorkshire and the Humber, with strong increases in Merseyside and Tyneside.”
He adds: “By age group, case rates continue to be higher in people ages 20-29.”
PHE’s chief of immunization said the rates are “stubbornly high” among young people and urged them to maintain social distancing.
Mary Ramsay said Pennsylvania: “As students return to college, they should remember to avoid gathering in large groups and stick to the rule of six.
“The more we allow this virus to spread, the more people are admitted to the hospital and some may die.
“We are also beginning to see more of the other respiratory infections that are common in the winter; measures to control Covid will also help reduce the risk of contracting these infections.”
Public Health England (PHE) regional director for London has said the news will allow officials “to respond more quickly and with additional measures if cases increase faster and faster.”
Professor Kevin Fenton said: “London’s placement on the watch list as an area of concern is a reflection of the increasing number of Covid-19 cases showing up on a variety of indicators.
“We are currently seeing much more widespread transmission in the city and being recognized as an area of concern is an important step in our efforts to control the virus.”
