Large Covid outbreak at the University of Glasgow, as 124 students contract the virus while 600 are told to self-isolate, after positive tests at the Liverpool, Dundee and Aberdeen campuses
A major Covid-19 outbreak at the University of Glasgow has caused 124 students to contract the virus and 600 to self-isolate, after positive tests on the Liverpool, Dundee and Aberdeen campuses.
Earlier this week, 500 students were revealed to self-isolate at Abertay University in Dundee after a confirmed case, while 80 students and seven staff members were confirmed to have coronavirus at the University of Liverpool.
There have also been “several” confirmed cases at the University of Aberdeen.
The outbreaks in Scotland have prompted a strong warning against house parties.
The University of Glasgow is the latest to see a Covid-19 outbreak among students, after Aberdeen, Abertay in Dundee and Liverpool.
During yesterday’s coronavirus briefing, National Clinical Director Jason Leitch said: ‘We need you not to have house parties, it couldn’t be clearer.’
Nicola Sturgeon said that the ‘significant outbreak at the University of Glasgow’ had impacted on the daily Covid-19 infection figure for the NHS Greater Glasgow area.
A total of 224 cases were recorded throughout the health board area last day, he said.

The outbreak in student residences in Glasgow has prompted a warning against house parties from Scottish health officials.
Professor Leitch said he had spoken with student leaders about the latest restrictions Tuesday through the National Union of Students.
He said: ‘We discussed what else they could do and what more messages they could help us with.
‘There are now a number of outbreaks in our institutions of higher and higher education across the country, with a significant number of positive cases.
“We need all students in Scotland to help us stop the spread of the virus.”
Addressing students directly, he reiterated the government’s public health advice on coronavirus and urged people to download the Protect Scotland app.
It is “vital” that those who are asked to self-isolate do so for a full 14 days, he said, staying in accommodation and not leaving for any reason.
Those who isolate themselves should try to avoid close contact with others in shared accommodation, he said.
Confirming that the rules on family reunions also apply to student accommodation, he added: ‘No parties are allowed. I’m sorry and hope you come back soon. ‘

The University of Glasgow confirmed on social media that it is dealing with a coronavirus outbreak at two student residences – Cairncross House and the Murano student village.
Those who self-isolate are provided with food and other supplies, the university said.
An incident management team meeting will be held on Wednesday afternoon.
A spokesperson for the University of Glasgow said: ‘We are aware of two significant clusters of positive Covid-19 cases at our Murano Street and Cairncross residences, which we believe were largely due to social activity around 12-14. September, the beginning of cooler weeks.

‘We are working closely with the NHS Greater Glasgow and the Clyde public health team to manage them.
“The total number of cases reported since the start of the mandate is 124, but the actual number is likely to be higher.
‘More than 600 students are isolated in all the residences.
“We are not aware of any student who has had to receive hospital treatment.”
