Luis Suárez had one more year left to run on his contract with Barcelona
Atlético de Madrid are set to sign striker Luis Suárez from La Liga rival Barcelona after the two clubs reached a £ 5.5m deal.
Suárez, 33, had one more year to fulfill the contract he signed with Barça in 2016, but new coach Ronald Koeman told him last month that it was not part of his plans.
“FC Barcelona and Atlético de Madrid have reached an agreement for the transfer of the player Luis Suárez,” read a statement on the official website of Barça. “The Madrid club will pay FC Barcelona 6 million euros in variables.

Suarez was thought to be close to reaching a deal with Italian champions Juventus, but delays in obtaining Italian citizenship held up a possible deal.
The Italian financial police and the Perugia prosecutor’s office have opened an investigation into allegations of irregularities regarding Suárez’s citizenship test last week.
It is alleged that Suárez knew the content of the exam before taking it and that his score was pre-assigned.
Juve could not sign Suárez without an Italian passport because it has already reached its quota of non-EU players.
The Serie A champions signed Álvaro Morata on a season loan from Atlético on Tuesday, and Juve will pay Atlético an initial loan fee of € 10 million (£ 9.2 million).

The deal for Morata, who spent two seasons at Juventus from 2014 to 2016, gives the Serie A champions the option to extend the loan for an additional 12 months, plus the option to purchase.
If Juventus take the option to buy the former Chelsea and Real Madrid striker at the end of this season, it will cost 45 million euros.
However, if they choose to extend the loan for one more year, Juventus would have to pay an additional € 10 million with the transfer fee at the end of that period which will then cost € 35 million.
