Matt Lucas channeled his inner Boris Johnson into a hilarious parody of one of the prime minister’s daily reports on the Downing Street coronairus.

The Little Britain comedian nailed the Prime Minister’s straight blonde hair and stuttering in a special prelude to the opening of tonight’s Great British Bake Off series, Lucas’s first as a host.

The 46-year-old muttered and stumbled through a garbled message, telling baking enthusiasts to use “common sense” about its hundreds and thousands of uses.

In the amusing clip, Lucas says, “We are now approaching Phase 46.

“Which means from Tuesday morning or Wednesday night, depending on your height, we’re, we’re, saying when it comes to baking: ‘If you must bake in a tent, bake in a tent.

“But please don’t bake in a tent.

“And we are asking people to use common sense regarding the distribution of hundreds and thousands.”

After the confusing, contradictory, and downright nonsensical speech, Lucas goes to answer questions from “the lady in the original dress”, his co-host Noel Fielding.

The veteran Bake Off host asks, “Is it sc-oh-ne or sc-on?”

A bewildered-looking Lucas then brings in his experts, played by judges Paul Hollywood and Prue Leith, who, of course, give entirely different answers.

The ‘Prime Minister’ ends by saying, “Well, I hope that clears things up for you.”

The fun opening was a hit on Twitter.

One person wrote: “GREAT mood. Your impression of Boris is spot on.”

While another said: “Absolutely magnificent. Matt Lucas is more Bojo than Boris Johnson (and makes a lot more sense). Wish I was in charge!”

And a third commented, “This was hilarious. Matt Lucas makes an excellent impression of Boris.”
