Gareth Bale has embarrassed many defenders during his illustrious career, and Micah Richards counts himself as one of them.
Bale went from a scrawny teenager at Southampton to a four-time Champions League champion at Real Madrid, via Tottenham.
The Welsh international has returned to the Premier League on loan for a season with Spurs.
And the former City Richards defender has hilariously recounted his experiences facing the 31-year-old, both good and bad.
“Many moons ago now, in Southampton, he was playing left back and I was right back,” he told Sky Sports. “There was a huge spread in the newspaper, Richards vs. Bale.
Let’s say I got over it. I ate it for lunch.
“So, go ahead a few seasons, he goes to the Spurs and I’m subconsciously thinking ‘it’s just Gareth Bale. I can take care of him. I had it in Southampton. ‘
“It was a huge, massive mistake. It destroyed me. If it weren’t for Joe Hart in that game, I remember it, first game of the season at White Hart Lane. Pace, power and fitness.
“I always thought as a defender ‘hit them hard from the start and they won’t come back.’ It just kept going back and forth and back.
“If Spurs get 70 percent of that Gareth Bale now, they’ll be a great team.”
