Four students at the University of St Andrews contracted coronavirus after a rookie party.

More than 40 people are now isolating themselves after meeting at a residence, which broke national coronavirus restrictions.

Director Sally Mapstone said: “

The waves of this one incident have consequences for all of us. “

On Friday, the university had asked students to observe a voluntary closure over the weekend.

The new cases bring the total at the university to seven, after three were announced last week.

The principal said in her message to the students: “I am sorry to say that last night four new positive cases were confirmed among our students.

“These new Covid cases were acquired in St Andrews and all are linked to a party at a residence in rookie week.”

She said the party violated the law and the university guidelines on socialization and safe behavior.

The director added that all the positive cases had a “relatively mild disease.”

Meanwhile, the University of Glasgow said there had been a “number of confirmed Covid-19 cases” in student residences.

A spokesperson for the university said: “We have informed Public Health Scotland and are following their guidance.

“All affected households are self-isolating and are supported by our Live Support team to ensure they have access to sufficient food and other supplies.”
