Detectives investigating the death of a man in Rochdale arrested someone on suspicion of murder.
The victim died after being hit by a vehicle after a previous assault in the city center.
They left him lying in the street after being attacked in the early hours of Sunday.
Paramedics called police to the scene at 3.10 a.m. in response to reports that a man was unconscious in a parking lot in front of The Esplanade, near Yates.
The victim, a man in his 30s, was pronounced dead at the scene.
Police say investigations are underway to identify him and inform his relatives.
A 22-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of murder.
He remains in custody for questioning.
Detectives say they have established that the victim was assaulted after a conversation with three men and was dumped on the road.
The men then left the scene and walked to Rochdale Memorial Gardens.
Shortly afterward, the victim was struck by a passing vehicle.
The driver of the vehicle stopped at the scene and continues to assist officers with questions.
On Sunday morning part of the Town Hall Square was cordoned off and a forensic tent was set up at the site.
Det Chief Insp Lz Hopkinson, GMP Major Incident Team, said: “This incident resulted in the loss of a man’s life, which will be devastating to his loved ones.
“We are still working to inform the closest family members of the victim so that he can be formally identified. Specialist officers are ready to support them during this process and beyond.
“A man is in custody, but our investigation is ongoing.
“Although we have lines of investigation to pursue, we will still ask anyone with information to help us share that information with us directly or through Crimestoppers anonymously.
“This incident occurred when several licensed venues in the city center were closing for the night, so it is likely that members of the public saw or heard something relevant.
“We know that the people in Rochdale are concerned about what has happened, but I would like to assure you that we are committed to establishing all the circumstances and ensuring that anyone responsible for committing a crime is identified and brought to justice.
“Additional officers will be in the area this week so anyone with concerns can speak with them.”
