Tesco has revealed that there was a case of COVID-19 in one of its main UK stores.
The supermarket giant said there had been a positive test result for a Prescot Extra in Merseyside.
A company spokesperson told the Liverpool Echo: “The safety of our customers and colleagues is our highest priority.
“We have introduced extensive measures in all of our stores to help keep everyone safe, including protective screens at each checkout, social distancing signage and regular deep cleaning.”
The case was confirmed two weeks ago, the store said, and “extensive measures” have been put in place at all of its branches to try to slow the spread of the deadly virus.
It is unclear on what date the case was confirmed exactly.
The store added that it is actively following advice from the government and health authorities to help keep people safe.
So far, the store has implemented social distancing measures, such as one-in-one-out systems and longer opening hours.
Markings on the ground are also visible to promote social distancing, as well as hand sanitizer.
It comes as pubs and restaurants potentially prepare to shut down Tuesday amid a surge in new COVID-19 cases.
The government said that as of 9am Saturday, there had been another 4,422 laboratory-confirmed coronavirus cases in the UK. In total, 390,358 cases have been confirmed.
He also said that 27 other people had died within 28 days of testing positive for Covid-19 as of Saturday. This brings the UK total to 41,759.
Separate figures released by UK statistical agencies show that 57,500 deaths have now been recorded in the UK where Covid-19 was mentioned on the death certificate.
The number of new confirmed coronavirus cases in Devon this week has fallen compared to last week’s figures.
Government statistics show 155 new cases have been confirmed in Devon and Cornwall in the past week, both in Pillar 1 data from NHS testing and Pillar 2 data from trading partners, compared to 154 new cases confirmed last week.
In Plymouth, the number of confirmed coronavirus cases has “ barely ” increased.
The number of new confirmed cases in the city has seen a small increase from 39 to 45.
Government statistics show that 155 new cases have been confirmed across the region in the past seven days, both in Pillar 1 data from testing conducted by the NHS and Pillar 2 data from trading partners, compared to the 154 new cases confirmed last week. Of the 155 new cases, only 45 were in Plymouth.
