Murder investigation underway after a man was stabbed on a residential street

A murder investigation is underway after a man was stabbed to death in Dingle this afternoon.

A wide police cordon remains on Prince William Street as forensic investigators continue to make inquiries.

Merseyside police say officers were called to the scene around 4.30pm after a man was reportedly stabbed to the chest.

Emergency services came and the victim, in his 30s, was taken to hospital where he was later pronounced dead.

A spokeswoman for the Force said a man in his 20s was detained and will later be brought in for questioning.

The relatives of the victim have been informed and have the support of specially trained agents.

Officers remain in the area to speak to witnesses and conduct further investigations, while detectives believe the attack was “targeted.”

Detective Superintendent Dave McCaughrean said: “We are appealing to anyone who has been in or around Prince William Street and has witnessed the incident or seen any suspicious behavior to contact us.

“A man has tragically lost his life and at this stage we are treating the incident as a target, however an investigation is now underway to establish all the circumstances.”

An air ambulance helicopter had landed in a patch of grass near the Baltic market this afternoon and is believed to have been deployed in connection with the stabbing.
