Additional Covid Measures Needed ‘Sooner Than Later’
Ministers must act “sooner rather than later” if they want to prevent a further increase in coronavirus cases leading to more deaths, a scientist warned.
Professor Neil Ferguson, whose model led the government to order the shutdown in March, said the UK was facing a “perfect storm” following the easing of controls over the summer.
His warning came as Boris Johnson was spending the weekend in Downing Street considering new restrictions in England, as the latest figures showed infections doubling every week.
Ministers are believed to be considering a temporary two-week “circuit breaker” in an attempt to break the chain of transmission.
The move could see pubs and restaurants closed or face a 10 p.m. curfew, while socializing between households could be banned.
Professor Ferguson said the government must act quickly.
“Right now we are at the infection levels we were seeing in this country at the end of February,” he told BBC Radio 4 Today.
“If we leave it another two or four weeks, we will return to the levels that we saw more like mid-March. That is clearly going to cause deaths because people will be hospitalized.
“I think some additional measures are likely to be needed sooner rather than later.”
