Some districts in these areas had been exempt from the meeting restrictions introduced in early August, but these districts will now also be subject to the ban.
Health and Social Care Secretary Matt Hancock said: “We are seeing a rapid increase in coronavirus cases in Lancashire, Merseyside, West Yorkshire, Warrington, Halton and Wolverhampton.
“Local leaders in these areas have called for stronger restrictions to protect the local population, and we are acting decisively to support them.
“I know that these restrictions will make daily life more difficult for many, but I know that residents will work together and abide by the rules so that we can reduce transmission rates.
“I urge local people to isolate themselves and get tested if they have symptoms, follow the advice of the NHS Test and Trace and always remember ‘hands, face, space’. If we stick to these steps, we will get through it together. “
These decisions have been made in close collaboration with local leaders, with many requesting restrictions to help prevent a further increase.
