Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer wants to sign a center back this summer but will postpone the move of a new defender until 2021 as he believes other areas of his team need reinforcements more urgently.
Donny van de Beek, 24, is United’s only signing so far this summer, but Solskjaer had planned to make at least three signings in his planning for next season.
20-year-old Jadon Sancho is United’s top target and the Dortmund winger would become a headline at the Theater of Dreams if his wish to move into the club were granted.
However, Solskjaer felt his team lacked depth in the final stretch of the season and is eager to add competition at left and center back.
While the club is still on the hunt for a left back following Sergio Reguilon’s decision to join Spurs, the Daily Mail reports that United will postpone a move for a center back until next summer.
Dayot Upamecano was seen as a potential partner for Harry Maguire, but RB Leipzig wanted more than £ 60 million for the Frenchman, which United were unwilling to pay.
It means that Axel Tuanzebe could have a chance to claim Maguire’s partner title, although Victor Lindelof is likely to continue in his place at the start of the season alongside the England international.
Van de Beek is expected to start when United take on Crystal Palace in their first Premier League game of the season on Saturday.
United have played just one friendly during their preseason, losing 1-0 to Aston Villa last Saturday.
Solskjaer felt that the team’s extended season meant that a packed preseason wasn’t necessary, but his opponents, Palace, have taken a different approach with several friendlies.
