Fernando Torres says that lies were behind his departure from Liverpool in 2011, although he has no one to blame other than himself for the slump that followed. Chelsea.
The Spanish forward enjoyed a sensational stint at Anfield from 2007-11, scoring 81 goals in 142 games in all competitions.
It was a big hit with Liverpool fans, but he says things changed when the new owners took over the club, changed the level of ambition and weren’t honest with him.
In January 2011, Chelsea signed Torres for £ 50 million and felt the move would give him a better chance of raising the silver.
“I was really happy in Liverpool,” Torres told talkSPORT. But if you remember at that time the club was about to be sold and it was a very difficult situation.
They sold all their best players, Javier Mascherano, Xabi Alonso, Rafa Benítez left, and they started bringing in young players.
So it took maybe six, six, seven years to re-create a winning team and I didn’t have that time because I left my home at Atlético to win trophies.
“Unfortunately there were many lies on the part of the owners that Liverpool had at that time, and in the end I needed to find my own way, which was Chelsea, which I thought would be the club that would offer me the possibility of winning trophies.”
Torres struggled to replicate his Anfield form at Stamford Bridge and managed just 45 goals in 172 games over the next three and a half seasons, sporting a shadow of his old self.
He hasn’t tried to put the blame on, feeling that he should have been able to fit into the Blues team more easily than he has.
“Maybe it was my fault for not being able to adapt faster,” explained the 36-year-old. “ I had really good moments, but I was not consistent, and if you are not consistent in a great club like Chelsea, someone will come in and take your position.
‘Getting to a club like that full of stars in the middle of the season was very difficult to fit in.
‘Maybe I didn’t have that association that I had [at Liverpool] but I always said it was my fault, I was old enough to find solutions but I didn’t.
“I am happy because I won the trophies I wanted, I played very good football but I did not do it every weekend.
“In any big club in the world, if you don’t perform every weekend, it’s not enough.”
Torres won the Champions League, Europa League and FA Cup with Chelsea and nothing at Liverpool, so his goals were ultimately achieved.
