Aston Villa left late to fire Burton Albion to captain Jack Grealish in inspired fashion within hours of signing a new five-year contract.
The captain was in brilliant form throughout Pirelli Stadium and threw a ridiculous volley the first time off a cross from Henri Lansbury.
Villa went to work to win after losing a goal after 90 seconds, missing Burton’s high-intensity press before midfielder Ryan Edwards squeezes Neil Taylor and finds Colin Daniel on the opposite flank. . The midfielder soon unleashed a right-handed pearl for the first time that whistled past Orjan Nyland.
However, Villa was tied just before the break, and it was that man again, Ollie Watkins, who scored his second goal in three days to bring it to 1-1.
However, Dean Smith’s team went ahead two minutes from time to avoid penalties with Grealish converting with sensational style.
Substitute Keinan Davis scored his first goal in over a year with a cold finish as Villa advanced to the third round and will face the winners of Bristol City or Northampton next week.
Here’s how we rate Villa’s players at Burton:
Orjan Nyland 6
He screamed and screamed from behind in typical Nyland style. I didn’t even see Daniels hit as, just before halftime, I watched Edwards’ effort expand. He had an observation report for large parts, he showed a good distribution to free Grealish in the second half.
Ahmed Elmohamady 6
He squeezed high and often became Villa’s out on the right side, almost playing like a right back on El Ghazi’s toes. The Egyptian kept advancing towards a long and deep cross which is clearly a tactic being worked on at Bodymoor Heath, with the man at the back stick tasked with heading towards those waiting to jump. Elmo got the nod ahead of Guilbert early on and did well. However, it was his man, Daniels, who took notice from the start. They put cross after cross but found no claret and blue shirts.
Kortney 6th house
He enters with Tyrone Mings in Villa’s pair of two left-handed centrals. I found Kane Hemmings a handful and he headed a couple of stray balls straight at the opponent. He improved in the second half and seemed more comfortable as Burton got tired.
Tyrone Mings 7
In his new number 5 jersey, Mings was Villa’s colossal leader at the back once again. Too strong and fast for Hemmings and he showed a good distribution to change the play. He always kept Marvelous Nakamba in check in front of him to make sure the Zimbabwean didn’t leave too much space between defense and midfield.
Neil Taylor 6.5
He caught the early doors when Edwards got past him before crossing to find Daniels. He found right-back Akins a great presence but, going forward, it was the Welshman’s ball who found Watkins to equalize.
Wonderful Nakamba 6
A rare start for ‘Naka’ anchoring Villa’s midfield in place of Villa’s first choice, Douglas Luiz. He showed serious levels of energy in that deep role, but was caught playing ball at times.
Jacob Ramsey 6.5
His first start for Villa and the youngster from Great Barr seemed as confident as he seems. A cunning operator in the middle of the park, passing sharp, direct and playing with his head held high. Last season’s loan at Doncaster appears to have attracted the 19-year-old. He has grown stronger and seems like a real talent. Reserved.
Henri Lansbury 8
He showed a beautiful variety of passes in the first half, beautiful Hollywood cross passes to find Grealish on several occasions. It was Lansbury’s ball that started Villa’s tie as his quick change allowed Villa to outnumber Burton before Watkins finished. Lansbury had a decent night of work and it was his perfectly weighted corner that found Grealish to score the winning goal. He attended Davis again later.
Anwar El Ghazi 5
A quiet night for the Dutchman, who seems poised for more cup starts than the Premier League this season given the imminent arrival of Bertrand Traore. However, he didn’t get involved enough in Burton, despite exchanging wings with Grealish in the second half. Winger was in the set pieces at all times, but overall he was mediocre.
Ollie Watkins 7
He scored his second goal in three days after holding on to a low cross from Taylor inside the six-yard box. As against United, Watkins found room to finish. The 24-year-old liked to mix it up with Burton’s middle-half bruises, he enjoyed the battle and showed great pace and athleticism. As mentioned, the £ 33 million man has that fox in the box that could be absolutely critical to Villa’s success in the upcoming season. However, he missed a dazzling opportunity, shooting the crossbar from the penalty spot as captain Grealish laid him on a layup. He looks like a scorer.
Jack Grealish 9 *
Burton’s right-back Ben Fox will be feeling it in the morning given the twist he had while trying to stop Villa’s man of the moment, Jack Grealish. The captain was in inspired form after signing his new contract and seemed to be doing very well. His cute ball for Taylor in preparation for Watkins’ goal was almost too smart for the left back, such was the ridiculously good pass. He went to the right for much of the second half as Villa searched for a winner. The winner came in great fashion when Grealish slammed into the corner of Lansbury’s house from the edge of the box Paul Scholes style. Than. A goal. Star man, again!

Substitutes
Douglas Luiz (replaces Ramsey, 70) 6.5
He played a little higher than usual knowing that Nakamba was behind him. He played a good ball with Davis moments after coming in and looked to dictate the play with Grealish. He looked stylish and will be wearing his tee shirt on Monday. Good again and gave Villa a boost.
Keinan Davis (replaces Watkins, 70) 7
He looked rusty in his initial rush forward, showing Wallace too much of the ball. Ready to sign a three-year contract reportedly. It will be an intriguing season for the 22-year-old who scored a well-scored goal, the first in more than a year since Crewe in last year’s competition.
Jota (where for El Ghazi, 80) 5
It was a waste with a forward chip but he hit one just over the bar five minutes after going in. He played on his favorite right side, but was given leave to take the ball in the central areas to force a winner.
