A vocal critic of Russia’s President Putin has shared a picture from his hospital bed as he recovers from being poisoned with novichok.
Alexei Navalny said that he has managed to breathe for an entire day without requiring medical assistance, telling his Instagram followers: “I miss you all.”
Monday, two independent laboratories in Sweden and France confirmed German findings that the opposition leader had been poisoned with the nerve agent.
Accompanying the photo, where he is surrounded by family, Mr. Navalny wrote: “Hello, I am Navalny. I miss you 😍. I still can’t do anything for myself, but yesterday I was able to breathe on my own all day.
“I did not use any external aid, not even the simplest valve in my throat. I really liked it. An amazing process, underestimated by many. I recommend it.”
Navalny, 44, is being treated in Berlin and slipped into an induced coma after falling ill on August 20 during a domestic flight in Russia.
It has been claimed that he was put novichok in his tea at the airport.
Russia has denied any involvement and says so far it has seen no evidence that it has been poisoned.
Samples of Mr. Navalny have also been sent to the Organization for the Prevention of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) in The Hague for testing.
Novichok is the same substance that was used to poison former spy Sergei Skripal and his daughter in Salisbury in 2018, an attack that Russia denies orchestrating.
Western powers, NATO and the EU have strongly condemned the latest alleged assassination attempt.
German Chancellor Angela Merkel said the use of the novichok showed that the “dangerous” attack was an assassination attempt and an attempt to silence the Russian dissident.
Navalny is the fiercest and most influential critic of President Putin in Russia.
In 2017, he was attacked by a pro-Kremlin supporter who threw a chemical in his eye, leaving him partially blind.
Last year he was rushed to hospital from his prison cell, again on suspicion of poisoning.
Through his Anti-Corruption Foundation, he has tried to denounce the alleged fraud and illegal activity of members of President Putin’s party, which he called “the party of scammers and thieves.”
The Russian authorities, in turn, have brought money laundering charges against him, imprisoned him on trumped-up charges and raided the homes and offices of his associates.
