Incredible aerial footage shows the extent of a massive landslide that has closed a major Scottish highway.

An estimated 5,000 tonnes of mud fell on the A83 Rest and Be Thankful road and Old Military Road in 24 hours as heavy rains hit the country.

The notorious stretch of the Argyll and Bute Expressway was destroyed during a similar storm last month.

Eye in the Sky footage captured tons of mud on the road

Eddie Ross from BEAR Scotland road maintenance company said: “With exceptionally heavy rain forecast on Saturday night and Sunday morning, we made the decision to proactively close the A83 and the OMR for safety reasons. “.

Ross recounted how 75mm of rain fell, nearly three weeks, in a few hours in the early hours of Sunday.

The deluge triggered another major landslide in the same location as on August 4.

He added: “Much of this was trapped in the temporary debris fence and debris pits, however, as the landslide event continued throughout Sunday, those measures were exceeded on the A83 and some reached Old Military Road “.

The clearance began today in drier conditions with a review of when the road could reopen tomorrow.

Ross added: “As always, we thank the local community for their patience as we deal with this unprecedented situation. Argyll, of course, remains open for business via the detour route and via the extended ferry services from Dunoon to Gourock. “
