Another 2,621 people have tested positive for coronavirus in the past 24 hours across the UK.
Another nine people died from the virus, bringing the death toll to 41,637, the Department of Health and Social Assistance said Monday.
It follows an increase of 3,300 new infections on Sunday and 3,500 cases on Saturday, some of the highest daily increases in the country since May.
Most doctors in England fear a second Covid-19 spike this winter, a new survey revealed on Monday.
The British Medical Association survey suggests that 86% of more than 8,000 doctors and medical students believe a second peak is likely or very likely in the next six months.
BMA Board Chairman Dr. Chaand Nagpaul warned: “With daily cases still alarmingly high and winter just around the corner, we are at a critical crossroads in the fight against this deadly virus.
“Every effort must be made to prevent a repeat of the horror and tragedy that we all experienced earlier this year.”
Former chief scientific adviser Sir Mark Walport also warned that the UK is “on the brink of losing control” of the pandemic as the R number rises above 1 for the first time since early May.
He stated that the only way the country can avoid the second wave that many countries in Europe seem to be experiencing is for people to immediately limit who they come into contact with.
Noted scientist Sir Walport told the BBC: “I think it should be said that we are on the verge of losing control. You just have to look across the Channel to see what is happening in France, what is happening in Spain.
“The French had 9,800 new infections on Thursday and you can see that their hospital admissions and indeed are increasing their intensive care admissions.”
The police minister today advised people living in Britain to call their neighbors to the police if they see them breaking the new “rule of six” law.
Kit Malthouse said the non-emergency police phone number 101 can be used to report any social gathering of more than six people.
Mr Malthouse told the BBC: “We are in discussions about what reporting mechanisms might exist, but obviously there is a non-emergency number that people can call and report any problems they want.
Certainly, during the initial stage of the confinement, we did see an increase in reports reaching the police. “If people are concerned, if they think there is a violation, then they have that option.”
