The FIA is investigating Lewis Hamilton for wearing a T-shirt with a message about the Breonna Taylor shooting before and after her victory at the Tuscan GP.

The six-time F1 champion topped the podium when he collected his winner’s trophy and ended his immediate post-race interview saying: “Justice for Breonna Taylor.”

Taylor, 26, a medical worker, was shot and killed by plainclothes police officers who raided her home in Louisville, Kentucky, in March.

The front of Hamilton’s shirt featured the words “Arrest the cops who killed Breonna Taylor,” while the back contained her image below the words “Say her name.”

Hamilton wore the jersey for the first time before the race when he again knelt down, as F1 drivers gathered at his anti-racism ceremony.

Speaking in later interviews, Hamilton said: “It took me a long time to get that shirt and I have wanted to wear it and raise awareness of the fact that there are people who have been killed on the street and there is someone who has been killed in their own home, And they’re in the wrong house, and those guys keep walking free

“We can’t rest, we can’t … we have to keep raising awareness with it.”

Hamilton was the last athlete to highlight Taylor’s fate.

NBA players dedicated post-game interviews to Taylor earlier this year, while at the WNBA, the jerseys have featured the names of women, like Taylor, who have been killed in alleged police or racial violence.

Meanwhile, tennis player Naomi Osaka wore a mask bearing Taylor’s name before her first-round match at the US Open. She revealed six more masks with the names of six other African American victims as she advanced to the final, which she won.

“We have to keep raising awareness with this and Naomi has been doing amazing so many congratulations to her,” said Hamilton.

“I think he’s an incredible inspiration with what he’s done with his platform. I think we have to keep pushing the issue.”

The Mercedes driver has been a leading voice in the Black Lives Matter movement and has called for lasting change both within F1 and in society at large.

Hamilton delivered the Black Power salute on the podium after winning the Styrian GP in July and is setting up a commission to understand how to expand opportunities for everyone in motorsports.
