Police were called to report that a car had lost control on the northbound carriageway between Junctions 9 and 11 near Tewkesbury and Gloucester.
A truck had stopped to protect the vehicle from passing traffic and to monitor the driver when another truck collided with him, police said.
The highway was closed in both directions after the accident.
The southbound carriage has reopened, but northbound on the M5 between junctions 9-11 remains closed, Highways England said.
