Fox News will air an interview Saturday night in which Donald Trump accuses Joe Biden of taking performance-enhancing drugs.
“I think there are probably possibly drugs involved,” Trump told Jeanine Pirro, in a published excerpt. That’s what I hear. I mean, possibly there are drugs. I don’t know how you can go from being so bad that you can’t even utter a sentence … “
Trump did not finish his own sentence, but went on to say that he was referring to the Democratic presidential candidate’s wavering performances in the early debates of the primaries, before his rise to victory following a victory in South Carolina.
“You saw some of those debates with a lot of people on stage,” Trump said. “He was, I mean, I used to say, ‘How can I possibly go on?”
According to the president, Biden won the nomination because the progressive vote was divided.
“And he only won because Elizabeth Warren didn’t quit,” he said. “If I had abandoned Bernie [Sanders] I would have won Super Tuesday, all states, and I would have had Bernie instead of Biden. “
Trump’s claim came shortly after his eldest son, Donald Trump Jr, denied claims that he used cocaine before speaking at the Republican convention. Surprisingly, it wasn’t the first time that Trump, 74, accused Biden, 77, of using drugs.
Speaking to the Washington Examiner last month, the president said: “We’re going to ask for a drug test, by the way, because his best performance was against Bernie. [in the final debate].
“It wasn’t like it was Winston Churchill because it wasn’t, but it was a normal and boring debate. You know, nothing amazing happened. And we’re going to ask for a drug test because there’s no way, you can’t do that. “
This week, Trump claimed to have been channeling Churchill when he decided not to tell the public what he knew about the coronavirus threat. The claim was ridiculed.
When asked by the Examiner if he was comparing the debates to a boxing match, before which wrestlers are screened for banned substances, Trump said, “Well, it’s a boxing match.
“It is no different from gladiators, except that we have to use our brains and our mouths. And our body to stand. I want everyone to stand. They want to sit down. “
Trump edged out Hillary Clinton during a debate in St. Louis in October 2016, following her opponent across the stage. He also challenged Clinton to take a drug test before her last debate because, he said, she had been “cheering up” before confronting him. She refused.
Trump and Biden will debate in Cleveland on September 29, in Miami on October 15 and in Nashville on October 22. Vice-presidential nominees Mike Pence and Kamala Harris will meet in Salt Lake City on October 7.
Biden did not immediately respond to Trump’s comments to Fox News.
Trump is famous for being a teetotaler and disapproving of drug use, but his political rise has been fueled by a well-documented love for Diet Coke and junk food.
Haunted by speculation about his physical and cognitive health, the president earlier this month was driven to deny rumors that a “series of mini-strokes” prompted a short-notice visit to the hospital in Washington last November.
